Non-BIEN Researcher

Access duration for the following non-BIEN researchers will be granted on a half year basis. Renewal Application Form should be submitted on or before 5 March and 5 September of every year if you wish to keep the right to access BELAB, the access period will start from 15 March and 15 September of the year. The access will be granted according to one of the following priority groups:

      v Student/Staff of BIEN Faculty

In addition to the specified quota, special approval may be granted by the Program Director subject to the capacity of BELAB. Access duration will be granted on a half year basis. * Applicants who are not belonging to the above prioritized groups may submit their application for  
  consideration. Approval may be granted based on the usage and the capacity of BELAB.
 
           
    v The research project of the above listed eligible personnel must be in one of the following areas:  
   

(1) Biological Information Engineering

(2) Bioprocessing and Bioproduct Design

     

(3) BioMEMs and Biomaterials

 
         
     Application Procedure
     

 

 
      v To complete the application, all personnel should read the relevant sections of the HKUST Safety and Environmental Protection Manual and the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering (CBE) Lab Safety Information;  
        When biological agents are involved, they should read the Biological Hazard guidelines in HSEO's safety manual;  

Where HSEO's guidelines are not sufficiently clear, the original reference material can also be examined on-line at 

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)

Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories (BMBL)

           

They should also read Appendix A of the Primary Containment for Biohazards: Selection, Installation and Use of Biological Safety Cabinets handbook from BMBL if BioSafety Cabinet is going to be used.

    v They must attend and pass the following courses offered by the HKUST Health, Safety and Environment Office (HSEO)  
     

(1) MC03 Chemical Safety II: Hazardous Waste Management

 
     

(2) MC07 Chemical Safety I: Chemical Safety for Laboratory User

 
     

(3) MC06 Biological Safety

 
     

(4) Other courses advised by their supervisor or safety officer

 
                e.g. Respiratory Protection  
                       Radiation Safety with Unsealed Radioactive Materials  
                       Laser Safety  
                       Pressure Safety  
           
      v They should submit a supervisor endorsed work plan via email for preliminary review  
       

Work Plan Details

 
           
v They should complete the following forms as appropriate
        BELAB Access Application Form (all personnel)  
        Safety Orientation Check List (all personnel)  
        CBE Risk Assessment Audit Declaration (all personnel and whenever a new work plan or amendment is submitted)  
        Occupational Health Assessment and Medical Surveillance Enrollment eForm (See user manuals for applicants and Principal Investigators)  if your experiment involves animal, BSL2 cell/bacteria, recombinant/synthetic nucleic acid, laser, radiation, SCBA or respirator. Please forward the technical staff a copy of the auto-reply email from the system after your submission
